Superfood for great Skin!

AVOCADOS for great skin

We hear a lot about free radicals and antioxidants. Marketing genius has inundated the consumer with these buzz words. But, what do the really mean?

Simply, free radicals are lonely negatives searching for a positve influence. This atom or molecule bears an unpaired electron and is extremely reactive, capable of engaging in rapid chain reactions that destabilize other molecules and generate many more free radicals. In the body, they are deactivated by antioxidants.

Avocados are a superfood, loaded with antioxidants that can derail the negative effects of the free radicals that lead to advanced aging generally caused by the pollution, poor nutrition and sun damage we encounter on a daily basis.

This superfood contains a surprising amount of fat — about 15 grams per half — but fortunately almost all of that is the monounsaturated fat (the same kind found in olive oil) that is thought to be good for the heart. Avocados are also loaded with potassium and fiber that are not only great for skin but are considered disease-fighting nutrients.

Known for their deliciously rich flavor, California avocados are also rich in phytochemicals ,(natural plant nutrients that help protect against a variety of cancers and diseases, including advanced aging).

Research shows that avocados rank highest in the following phytochemicals and nutrients among the 20 most frequently consumed fruits:

Vitamin E
– a powerful antioxidant known to slow the aging process and protect against heart disease and various forms of cancer.

 Glutathione
– functions as an antioxidant like vitamin E to neutralize free radicals that can cause cell damage and lead to disease.

.  Folate
– promotes healthy cell and tissue development. Folate is especially important for woman of childbearing age as it helps protect against birth defects.

 Potassium – helps balance the body’s electrolytes. Avocados contain 60 percent more potassium than bananas.

 Magnesium – helps produce energy and is important for muscle contraction and relaxation.

 Fiber – lowers cholesterol and reduces risk of heart attack. Aids in digestion. (Digestive function is a major consideration in skin disorders).

Avocados are also high in Omega 3′s. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health but the body can’t make them — you have to get them through food. For skin health, their most important function is the omegs’s ability to strengthen the cell matrix of the skin, promotiong collagen and elastin production.

Many people are surprised to learn that avocados are a fruit. They love the taste of avocados but do not realize they are so rich in nutrients and phytochemicals. The avocado’s unique nutrient profile makes them a stand out among commonly eaten fruits.
